The Executive Committee of the WDSL have decreed that there will be no fixtures for the Easter weekend of Friday April 19 to to Sunday April 21 2019.

But clubs have been asked to consider entering into the seventh annual Wicklow Cancer Support (WCS) Easter Soccer Blitz to held at that time.

The event started back in 2013. And has raised an astonishing €46,000 since then.

The event takes on much more prominence after the sad passing of co-founder Adele Doran in March 2015.

For over four decades, her husband Tony ‘Butch’ Doran was associated with Wicklow Town AFC as a prominent player and (like his wife) as a club official.

Their son Anthony represented Wicklow Town AFC and Wicklow Rovers with distinction as well as the Wicklow League at Oscar Traynor level.

But of late, Butch’s attention has as an active member of the Wicklow Branch of the Irish Soccer Referees Society (ISRS).

Back in 2013, through the co-operation of Wicklow Town AFC, he and Adele hosted the inaugural Wicklow Cancer Support Blitz event to much success as a thank you for the help Adele received as she battled illness.

“Last year, we had 400 young players enjoy a fun day of soccer with all receiving medals for their participation. We are again looking for support at this year’s blitz and hope teams from your club can join us on the day. We have wonderful sponsors who help make the event. And we are thankful to them,” said Tony Doran.

The event will be staged on Good Friday (April 19) at Wicklow Town AFC’s Finlay Park with neighbouring club Wicklow Rovers’ home of Whitegates – weather permitting.

The blitz is open to both Schoolboys and Girls from U8 to U13/14.

Run on a 7-a-side basis, all interested clubs/teams are to contact organising committee at eastersoccerblitz@gmail.com no later than Sunday April 14 with their entries.

Or Una Lynch on 086 1550853 for any information or inquiries.

Teams will be notified of times and fixtures after Sunday April 14.

Teams will be asked to register at the organisers tent before heading to pitch and registration fees to be paid. (€50.00 per team).

If possible, clubs/teams are asked to take a sponsorship card to do their best to raise additional money (everything will go to Wicklow Cancer Support).

Every player will receive a medal when their matches are finished.

A shop will be open all day, with all proceeds going to WCS.

It has been confirmed that the FA Cup, The replica European Cup won by Celtic in 1967 and last year’s Champions League trophy won by Real Madrid will be on display at the blitz.

Then on Saturday (April 20), there will be a senior’s (over 16) charity event for the James (Bimbo) Kelly trophy and the PJ O’Brien Cup.
