SSE AIRTRICITY NATIONAL UNDER 19 LEAGUE
SOUTHERN ELITE DIVISION
UCD …. 2 GALWAY UNITED …. 2
Both sides had to finally settle for a point apiece from a closely contest 2-2 draw in this rearranged SSE Airtricity Under 19 fixture at the AUL Complex.
But for UCD it might be deemed a missed opportunity to make ground on the sides above them in the Southern Division.
While Nigel Keady’s Galway outfit will be the happier as a point on the road continue their unbeaten start to the season and keeps them in fourth position well in touch with the current top trio Cork City, Shamrock Rovers and Limerick FC.
However Galway will probably rue the points dropped after coming from behind to level ten minutes before the break and then go on to take the lead midway through the second half only to concede an equaliser a minute later.
Then a couple of top class saves from Matthew Traynor in the closing minutes denied Galway a winner with the UCD ‘keeper keeping out goal bound efforts from Josh Quinlivan and Jack O’Neill.
UCD looked impressive early on and when in front after neat play by Charlie Smith set up Billy Griffin to deliver a pin point cross from the left for Danu Kinsella Bishop to strike past Sam O’Gorman.
Smith and Aaron McGrath had shots held by O’Gorman before Galway hit back to grab an equaliser on 35 minutes.
Quinlivan played a neat one two with Harry Rogers and the Galway striker’s close range shot left Traynor helpless.
A great finish by Caoilfhionn O’Dea after Quinlivan was again the provider had Galway in front on 65 minutes.
The lead only lasted another minute as UCD responded in fine style with Ethan Levins sweeping home the equaliser from Ciaran Behan’s perfect left wing cross.
Later Kinsella and Levins had shots blocked and Dan Mullen put his effort well over before Traynor came to UCD’s rescue with his late tip top saves.
