It needed a dramatic penalty shoot-out for Tallaght City to claim their third O’Neill’s Sheeran Cup on Saturday in Home Farm against an unlucky Templeogue Utd (A).

This was always going to be a tight affair, and so it proved as two of the biggest hitters in the Premier League went head to head for almost two hours without either finding the net.

Chances were few throughout, with both teams having chances early on, City through Eoin Greene and Jordan Whelan while at the other end Niall Bartley missed a glorious chance to give Templeogue the lead when he somehow shot wide while finding himself one on one with Tallaght keeper Andy McCarton.

A long-range effort almost sneaked in just before the break when “Man of the Match” Eoin Greene let fly from 40 yards, but it fell just short and instead nestled on the roof of the net.

The deadlock continued throughout the second half with City enjoying more of the possession and the constant threat from Greene looked to have finally paid off when on 70 minutes he managed to find the net, only to be ruled off-side by linesman Stephen Farrell.

Another chance for Greene late on brought a brilliant save from Templeogue’s keeper Stephen Kelly while his counter part Andy McCarton had to watch Aaron Connolly’s effort all the way before the final whistle sounded.

Extra time saw Tallaght ‘s Cillian Byrne heading for an early shower after he was booked for a second time, while a chance near the death for sub Darren Byrne almost won it for the 10 men of City, but he somehow found the Templeogue defense clearing his effort from five yards out…. queue penalties, with Tallaght finally winning out 7-6 for back to back Sheeran Cup wins.
