SLIGO LEITRIM LEAGUE

Gilmartin nets four as Benbulben book their place in Frank Kennedy Memorial Cup

North Sligo side Benbulben FC met with Ballygawley Celtic at Mac Sharry Park on Friday night In the Frank Kennedy Memorial Cup Semi Final. The league tables indicated that Ballygawley Celtic 5th in the table were massive favourites against bottom of the table Benbulben.

Once again league form was proved worthless when the young guns of Benbulben roared into a 2-goal lead at the halfway stage. Ballygawley had no answer to the slick and decisive approach of Benbulben and were again hit for 2 more goals in the second half.

Ballygawley responded briefly with a goal each from Christy Markham and Simon Mc Keon but as always keeping the best wine till last the hero and Man of The Match was Benbulben Oisin Gilmartin who bagged all four goals in a blistering display of clinical finishing that books their place in the Frank Kennedy Memorial Cup where they meet with St Johns FC on Friday the 20th of May at Mac Sharry Park what a game we have in store.

The second semi-final seen St Johns FC welcome Carrick Town to Mac Sharry Park for their Sunday afternoon kick off. Again, would league form shine through or go out the window at stake a place in the Cup Final. Forget league form this was yet another Classico St Johns took the lead after 5 minutes when Darragh McGoldrick fired them into the lead.Carrick Town roared back and were level 6 minutes later when Ray Mulvey scored. Then Carrick went too town when Mulvey struck again on 33 minutes driving them into a 2-goal lead and just before the break Mick Murtagh had the towns 3rd goal with a tremendous finish.

St Johns now had their backs to the wall but as they showed in their previous game against league champions Calry Bohs they have that never say die attitude. They were back in the hunt 5 minutes into the second half when Stephen Armstrong finished from the penalty spot St Johns had their tails up and on 58 minutes Michael Doyle levelled matters with the sweetest of goals.

This was proving to be a nail-biting encounter with both sides throwing caution to the wind in search of that elusive goal. The opportunity presented itself on 70 minutes and Darragh Mc Goldrick was on target hitting his second goal and what proved the winner in a fantastic semi-final. What a final we have instore David v Goliath but ignore all the statistics in Finals Fortune favours the Brave its anyone Cup.

Cartron United welcomed Leitrim kingpins Manorhamilton Rangers to Mac Sharry Park on Sunday morning in the Semi Finals of the Glasshouse Hotel Cup. Both sides were evenly matched, and this showed in the score line with Cartron United winning by the odd goal in three. The first half was a scoreless affair with both defences giving little away. On 53 minutes Ryan Lynch fired Cartron into the lead.Manor stayed composed and were rewarded on 68 minutes when Diarmuid Giblin cracked home the equaliser.

The game was now cat and mouse with both sides going in search of that elusive goal and 7 minutes from time the opportunity presented itself with Enda Mc Gowan hitting the killer strike for a jubilant Cartron United who will now meet either MCR FC or Carbury FC in the Final on Saturday the 21st of May at Mac Sharry Park what a fitting game to complete the league 21/22 Season.

Glasshouse Hotel Cup Quarter Final Carbury will take on MCR in the semi-final of the Glasshouse Hotel Cup after a 10-0 drubbing of Cliffoney Celtic in Mullaghmore on Sunday morning. Jason Lyons scoring four, while Gareth Kelly and Mark Hannon netted a brace each.

Carbury took the lead early in the first half when Mark Hannon blasted home after a lovely cross from Niall Brennan. Mark McGoldrick thought he had doubled the lead moments later, but referee Philip McLoughlin blew up for offside.

There was some frustration that McGoldrick’s goal was disallowed, but Carbury made amends shortly afterwards when Lyons nodded home from Niall Brennan’s cross, before Ryan McManus made it 3-0 with his well struck penalty. Carbury went into the break 3-0 up but having been beaten by this Cliffoney side earlier in the season, Carbury were still wary of the North Sligo men.

Niall Brennan put those fears to bed just before the hour mark when he cut inside and buried his shot into the top corner to make it 4-0. Reinforcements arrived seconds later, with Gareth Kelly and Aaron Murrin coming off the bench to add to more attack for the final 30 minutes.

Kelly’s impact was an immediate one, as his stunning finish on 60 minutes extended the lead to 5-0. Kelly bagged his second minutes later after good work from Lyons, who squared it to the veteran to tuck home for his second of the morning and Carbury’s 6th. At 6-0 up there was no signs of letting up. Lyons made it 7-0 as he struck from Kelly’s ball, and it was 8-0 shortly afterwards as the season’s stop scorer for his hat-trick with a finish from close range.

Hannon’s second made it 9-0, with a fourth from Lyons rounding off the scoring for Carbury to finish with a 10-0 victory.

Carbury will now take on MCR in the semi-final of the cup this Thursday evening at Sean Fallon Park.

Team: Mark Rooney, Gerry Brennan, Colm Jinks, Ryan McManus (Aaron Murrin, 59), Gary Finan, Ross McLoughlin, Niall Brennan (Gareth Kelly, 59), Tyler Stallard, Mark McGoldrick, Jason Lyons, Mark Hannon.
