Sheriff YC complete an AUL treble by adding Challenge Cup to trophy cabinet

AUL CHALLENGE CUP FINAL:

SHERIFF YC……….. 2 ST. PAUL’S ARTANE………..0

Despite the inclement weather a large crowd turned up at The AUL to see if St. Paul’s of Artane could put a stop to the Sheriff juggernaut in The AUL Challenge Cup final.

The game began at a blistering pace and, after Darren Dunne had almost slid an effort past Stephen Whelan in the second minute, Paul’s almost took the lead two later.

By DERMOT CLARKE

An excellent move involving Colm Smith, Alan Talbot and Ger Keating culminated in Nathan Smith sliding the ball across the 6 yard box on the deck from the left but Dave McCabe failed to find the net at the far stick.

Just after the hour mark Paul’s had a goal disallowed for offside after Talbot had struck the crossbar but at that stage it looked like YC had a real fight on their hands against the only team to defeat them domestically this term.

On the 20 minute mark Whelan clawed a curling effort from Dylan Grimes away for a corner and after a cooling down period Grimes almost gave Sheriff a half-time lead with a free-kick from 20 yards.

There was everything to play for as the teams went in tied at zero as was the case on Sunday morning in the Viberstore final where Sheriff faced Hardwicke.

Sheriff, as they did on Sunday also, began to assume control as the second half began.  Just before the hour mark they were awarded a penalty when Joe Flood went down under a challenge on the edge of the box.

Stephen Maher stepped up to knock the spot-kick home with cheeky aplomb.  Paul’s had barely time to regroup when, after a bit of sloppy defending Pat Oglesby knocked a ball into Keith Rickard’s path and he managed to squeeze the ball through Whelan’s legs for his third goal in a couple of days.

Paul’s soldiered on but they had a mountain to climb at this stage and it was Sheriff who enjoyed the better of the opportunities towards the end.

So a treble then for YC and Dylan Grimes, who covered acres of ground and caused the Paul’s rearguard many headaches was awarded man-of-the-match.

They’re not finished yet either as all of you seem to know.
