SEMI FINAL LINE UP IN COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES LEAGUE ANNOUNCED

By John Hudson

The stage is now set for the knockout stages of the Colleges and Universities League in the New Year following the semi final draw for all five divisions.

After a break of a season due to the Covid-19 pandemic the league finally returned last month and apart from a couple of outstanding fixtures which will be played in January all divisions successfully completed their programme of group games.

The semi final line up for the Premier and First Division is pre-determined with the top side in the North and South groups meeting the second placed side in the opposite group.

TU Dublin made their debut in the top flight this season under their new structure whereby they select one team from the three separate campuses of the new university at the City Campus in Grangegorman and at Blanchardstown and Tallaght.

It has been a winning start for the side packed with League of Ireland players and head coach Jamie Moore has steered them to the top position in the North group with a 100 % record which gives them a home semi final against four times Premier winners IT Carlow.

The other semi final has University of Limerick who topped the South group bidding for a chance to claim the title for the first time since their only other success in 2009 when they entertain Maynooth University.

The first team drawn has home advantage in the semi-finals except where the distance between teams proves a problem and then the game will be played at a suitable neutral venue.

All the semi-final games are set to be played in early February with the finals earmarked for the first week in March at the Athlone Town Stadium.
