SCHUTTE FIRES CABO TO 12 PREMIER SUCCESS OVER BRAVE LEIXLIP UNITED

DDSL 12 PREMIER

CABINTEELY FC…………2 LEIXLIP UNITED…………..1

A CHARMER. Devo would have loved it. Paul Martin too.

By NIALL SCULLY

It was played in the middle of the Kilbogget athletic track. A 12 Premier duel fit for the San Siro. The perfect bag of chips.

John Byrne was in charge. One of the best referees in the city. It was the mildest of Saturday mornings. There was an odd rain drop. The game overflowed with quality.

Leixlip’s centre-forward, Finn Geraghty, is a delightful footballer. He showed cushion control. And he excels at bringing his team-mates into the play.

Finn scored the opening goal. It saw Leixlip lead 1-0 at the break. He continued to light up the match with some excellent runs down the right, skipping over tackles and sending over an envelope of invitations.

Leixlip’s Seán Tully also did superb work wide on the right. Taking the ball deep into the home back garden.

Chances were few. Top-class defending saw to that. And some fine goal-keeping.

Every pass was measured. Players were thoughtful on the ball. Such clever awareness. Cabinteely’s Rhys Knight’s right foot could open a tin of Batchelor’s beans.

One time, tight to the right sideline on the halfway line, he displayed a marvellous pocket of skill in the heavy traffic to make a yard and deliver a through ball.

Both teams were willing to have a pop. Cabo’s Callum Hennessy connected right on the laces. It didn’t miss by much.

All the boys worked so hard. Forwards being the first defender. Dylan Bourke making a brilliant sliding tackle wide on the left.

It was Dylan who lobbed in the equaliser. Showing commendable composure on the edge of the box to guide the bouncing ball to the basket.

Before that, Eric Schutte made a storming run down the right and shook the side-netting, with Leixlip’s ‘keeper, Luke Kelly, narrowing the angle like Daren Randolph.

One of the best moves of the match came from Leixlip midway through the second half when it was 1-1. Geraghty’s precise pass released Danny Kelly on the left. Danny found Adam O’Donnell who brought a tidy one-handed save from Noah Douglas.

Ten minutes from time came the winner. A penalty. Schutte placing his left-footed shot low to the left corner.

Leixlip gave it their all as they pushed for the leveller. Adam Brennan got in a firm strike, and in the last action of the day, he curled a Messi-like free-kick from the left edge of the area which forced Douglas into making another valuable one-handed stop.
