Saints hit eight to maintain winning start

CIAN O’BRIEN was St. Anthony’s four goal marksman as they maintained their 100% winning start to their WDSL U12 Division 1 season.

Remarkably, Rathnew scored the first and last of the ten goals in the Saturday’s encounter at Shamrock Park. But in between, United scored eight times to make it two wins on the trot having beaten Sporting Greystones FC 4-0 at Finn Park at the start of March.

The Villagers had begun their campaign three weeks ago by defeating Greystones United AFC B 4-0 at the Woodlands. They continued that vein of form with just three minutes gone. Mason McGovern gathered a left-wing delivery, burst into the box and rounded Saints keeper Alex Doyle to slot in.But the visitors dominated from then until the final whistle.

They were back on level terms in the 22nd minute. Leo McFarland slipped Cian O’Brien in to score from 14-yards with a shot that went in off the post.

Then in the 26th minute, McFarland’s 20-yard free was well saved by Scott Doyle. But Cian O’Brien pounced on the rebound close in.The second period was only 15 seconds old when it became 3-1. Simon O’Brien’s cross-shot was stopped by Scott Doyle. But Cian O’Brien converted the follow-up.The striker notched his fourth in the 36th minute.

He peeled off his marker on the edge of the box to side-foot in from ten-yards.Hughes claimed his second score in the 41st minute. The midfielder evaded two tackles before hitting a 20-yard effort that swerved low to the net.

Number six arrived in the 46th minute. Scott Doyle thwarted McFarland on the right by-line, but substitute Eamon Ginster arrived at the back post to squeeze the ball in from a tight angle.Less than 90 seconds later, Simon O’Brien pulled the ball back from the right end-line for Hughes to angle a low drive to the left corner of the net.

Then in the 50th minute, Scott Doyle’s clearance hit a team-mate on the edge of the penalty area Simon O’Brien was first to react and chipped to an empty net.To their credit, Rathnew never gave up. They were rewarded with nine minutes to go as Leo Maguire fired in from 14-yards after Darragh Leacy and Sean Doyle combined.
