Plunkett plunders priceless goal as Jobstown lift LFL Development Cup

Jobstown Celtic……….. 1 Maynooth……. 0

Jobstown Celtic captured the O’Neill’s U.19 Development Cup on Saturday with a one nil victory over Maynooth in Home Farm.

The goal, coming after only the second minute, was a stunning effort from 25 yards out by Dominic Plunkett who’s shot found it’s way over the Maynooth keeper and into the top corner.

A chance soon later for Celtic’s Lee Kenny may have doubled the Tallaght side’s advantage, but his shot was well dealt with comfortably by the Maynooth defense.

That’s as good as it got for Jobstown in the first half as Maynooth start to take control of the game with Luke McDonald, Jack Strickland, Alan Flynn and Ross Banahan all going close to netting, while a header just before the break from “Man of the Match” Cian Herbert could have brought the sides level only for Darrell McCarthy in the Jobstown goal being equal to the effort.

The second half brought more pressure from Maynooth and Herbert was unlucky again on the 50th minute when his second headed attempt on goal came off the crossbar following a corner.

Sean Doyle proved a lonely figure at times up front for Jobstown as they looked to swamp the midfield, sniffing out the danger from Maynooth’s main player makers Andy McGuire and Jack Strickland, and it was the 75th minute before Doyle’s team got a chance on goal when his shot was well saved by the feet of Sean Ledwidge in the Maynooth goal.

Despite the defensive approach by Celtic, Maynooth kept pressing desperately looking for a late equilser with Alan Flynn going closest near the end with two chances, but the Jobstown defense stood strong and held out until Stephen Farrell blew the full time whistle.
