MALONE DELIGHTED AT RETURN OF COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES WOMEN’S CUPS

Joey Malone

The latest draws for the two Women’s Colleges and Universities cup competitions have been held and after missing out for the past two years the return of the annual cups is most welcome by the Women’s Colleges and Universities chairman Joey Malone.

By John Hudson

‘The women’s game in Third Level institutions suffered badly with the onset of the Covid-19 crisis in March 2020. We only managed to complete the Premier Division before the first lockdown. As a result, the league Division One final never got played and our popular cups competitions like the leagues were also put on hold. So, we’re delighted that after successfully resuming our league programme in early November, we are now in a good position to plan ahead and complete the final stages of the leagues and the cups.’

UCC were the last winners of the Kelly Cup defeating Maynooth University on penalties in the 2019 final at Crusaders FC Seaview Stadium, Belfast.

However, the Cork side made an early exit on the cup’s resumption going out in an opening round tie at NUI Galway.

While Maynooth hit top form to register a comprehensive 8-1 win over Letterkenny IT but face a stiff task in the quarter finals with a trip to Munster TU-Cork.
