Limerick advance to FAI inter youths final with shootout victory at Jackman

By BERNARD O’NEILL

THE Limerick District League advanced to the Inter-County Youth final this afternoon after a penalty shoot-out win over Inishowen at Jackman Park.

Both sides were locked at 1-1 after normal time and extra time but Limerick held their nerve from the spot to win 4-3 and set up a final with Waterford.

Meantime, Janesboro moved seven points clear of second place Pike Rovers after a 4-2 win over struggling Kilmallock in the Premier Division this morning.

Two-goal Shane Clarke, Danny O’Neill and Keith Mawdsley were on target for the defending champions versus third-from-bottom opposition at Pearse Stadium.

The Boro have two more games played than Pike.

Ballynanty Rovers played themselves back into the equation with a 2-0 victory over Geraldines. The win moves Balla onto 40 points – nine points behind the Boro but with a game in hand.

Elsewhere in Limerick’s top flight today, Fairview Rangers beat Nenagh AFC 2-1 to tighten their grip on fifth spot.
Regional United, who are lying fourth in the table, hammered relegated Crew Park 7-0.

The Dooradoyle side was on the wrong end of an FAI Junior Council decision this week after the Council reinstated Sheriff YC in the FAI Junior Cup after upholding the Dubliners protest against the Shnnonsiders.

Sheriff, who were beaten 3-2 by Regional in the last eight of the Cup, were awarded a 3-0 victory over Regional after the FAI upheld their protest which was based on the eligibility of a player.

It’s understood the protest was centred around issues with International Transfer Clearance rules. It’s expected that Regional will appeal the FAI Junior Council decision.

Sheriff YC are now set to meet Aisling Annacotty, who were scheduled to face Regional in an all Limerick semi-final, in the last four in Dublin next month.
