LEINSTER SENIOR LEAGUE – MAJOR SATURDAY

CRUMLIN’S DESERVED TITLE BUT POINTS GO THE WAY OF SLICK COLLEGE

CRUMLIN UNITED……..0  UCD…….3

UCD  turned party poopers at Pearse Park on Saturday as Crumlin United’s victory parade was somewhat derailed as the Students recorded a deserved three-nil success in this high-tempo Major Saturday encounter.

Fortunately the league title was already in the bag as a result of  Thursday’s 5-2 win away to Maynooth Town which left them clear of Malahide United, St Mochta’s and a fast finishing effort by the Belfield students.

On Saturday they were fully deserving of their success and played some nice football and were very solid across the back rarely giving the home side a glimpse of goal.  After the initial bout of sparring it was the Students who hit the front with a well crafted goal.

A throw in down the right wing.saw Niki Grotz gallop clear and his pullback found the inrushing Alan Murray who finished with a crisp finish past Ryan Skelly in the home goal.

Crumlin tried hard to get a foothold and Jamie Geoghegan and Alan Bennett worked hard while Shane Hyland looked lively trying to create a clear sight on the visitors’ goal.

But the Students moved the ball around the park well and they could have doubled their lead only for Nathan Benson to make a brilliant tackle on Killian Downs and again spurned a gilt edged opportunity on 39 minutes when Bowers set up  Andreaas Djuruus but he pulled his shot wide of the target.

Crumlin were very committed but UCD showed a physicality and appetite for the contest and while Morgan in the UCD goal was well protected by his back four, Ryan Skelly took off a couple of decent saves to keep his side in the game But there was little he could do in the 63rd minute when UCD doubled their advantage when Grotz found the overlapping Isaac Akinsete with a beautiful ball over the top and the pacy right-full latched onto the ball before drilling past Skelly from an acute angle to the roof of the net.

Crumlin sprung the experienced Tony Griffiths and Sean Larkin from the bench and Larkin should have got his side back in the game when he  headed over when well placed in front of goal. As is often the case after a let-off, the opposition exact a cost for the miss and UCD’s Liam Higgins finished to the net at the back post in the 79th minute to initiate a ‘Robbie Keane’ like summersault to celebrate his goal.

Robbie’s cousin Adam Bennett in the Crumlin No.8 jersey along with his team mates wouldn’t have been impressed with the summersault rendition but the goal stood and it was no more than UCD’s efforts deserved.

Crumlin injected some pace into final 10 minutes looking to net a consolation, but the damage on the day was done and College held firm to the finish.

Bernard Buckley of the Leinster Senior League was on hand however to wash away any Crumlin disappointment with the presentation to skipper Jamie Geoghegan with the league trophy.

It was the final act in a long season but one which saw Crumlin United deservedly finish top of the pile in what is always a hotly contested division.
