Kavanagh steps into the middle as Arklow hit Rathnew for eight!

RATHNEW AFC……. 1 ARKLOW TOWN A……. 8

ARKLOW TOWN maintained their 100% away record in the WDSL U12 A1 Plate with a hard-earned win over Rathnew AFC.

Leading 3-1 at the break, the visitors hit five unanswered goals at Shamrock Park on Thursday (April 25) to make it two wins on the road so far in the competition.

The match was supposed to be taken charge of by a Wicklow ISRS member. With the original appointee unavailable, a mix-up lead to no other referee being available.

Instead of the match being called off, both teams agreed that the WDSL Fixtures Secretary and County Co-Ordinator Brian Kavanagh – a qualified referee – would officiate at late notice as he was at the venue for the WDSL Management meeting that was due to take place that evening.

The result leaves the Black and White’s in second place in the competition.

That’s after Ashford Rovers A overcame St. Anthony’s Kilcoole United FC A 8-0 on Wednesday last at Finn Park in Kilcoole.

With just five minutes gone, Shane Gregory’s defence splitting pass saw Kyal Byrne cut the ball back from the left end-line for strike partner Aaron Ebbitt to tap in.

Four minutes later, Ebbitt repaid the favour as his low centre was converted by Byrne close in.

Rathnew pulled one back in the 21st minute. Ten-year-old Jordan Brady hassled for possession along the left by-line. And his cross was finished off by Mason McGovern’s ten-yard low placed effort.

But the visitors restored their two-goal cushion right on half time. Ryan Redmond broke along the left channel form a home corner. He played Byrne in behind two defenders for the forward to pull the ball back for Ebbitt to round off a great team move.

As the rain lashed down after the turnaround, the ‘Town mastered the conditions.

In the 33rd minute, Ryan Redmond and Ebbitt combined for Byrne to crack in a fine half volley.

Byrne set-up sub Donnacha Walker to make it 5-1 in the 37th minute with an astute lob. Within five minutes, Walker repaid the compliment as Byrne completed his treble.

Kian Scanlon created the next score on 47 minutes as Tom Kavanagh brilliantly lobbed in from 25-yards.

With six minutes to go, a blocked rebound ran kindly for Ciarán Redmond to fire to the net from ten-yards.
