Cork City player Katie McCarthy has today been named the Só Hotels Women’s National League Player of the Month for April.

20190515 Monica Gilmore of the Charleville Park Hotel presenting the Só Hotels Womens National League Player Of The Month for April to Katie McCarthy of Cork City Womens FC.

The experienced midfielder, who recently made her 100th appearance for Cork City, was presented with the award in the Charleville Park Hotel this afternoon by the hotel’s Business Development Manager Monica Gilmore.

McCarthy beat off competition from Peamount United’s Eleanor Ryan Doyle and Galway’s Sinead Donovan to pick up the prize, after an excellent month for City which also saw her bag four goals.

The 28-year-old student teacher from Ballinhassig hit a century of games for the Leesiders on May 5 in her side’s fixture against Shelbourne.

Speaking at the presentation, McCarthy explained that she feels Cork’s performances so far this season have been a real team effort.

She said: “I think I had a good month personally, but then collectively, we had a really good month. We had good performances and some really good results in the month of April. We’ve quite a young squad so it’s taking a bit of time getting a bit of experience, but I think things are looking really positive.

And McCarthy added that she can just see the side getting better and better as they get more games in and get to know each more.

She said: “We’re looking forward to keeping on improving – we’re getting better all the time as a squad and as a group of players, so I’m really enjoying it at the moment. I’m really happy to have won the award, I’m quite proud actually.”
