IT CARLOW – BA SPORT COACHING & BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

IT CARLOW SOCCER COURSE A FANTASTIC STEPPING STONE TO FULL-TIME CAREER IN THE GAME

PAUL O’REILLY believes that the soccer oriented courses available at IT Carlow are the ideal platform for Leaving Certificate students and others both male and female who might have ambitions to pursue a full-time career working in football.

Dubliner O’Reilly returned to Ireland in 2020 after spending five years working for the New Zealand FA and managing one of their National League sides to take over his former role as Course Leader on the BA Sport Coaching & Business Management (Soccer) courses at IT Carlow.

A product of St Joseph’s Boys FC followed by a spell in amateur football in Dublin O’Reilly went on to study at Liverpool University where he gained a BSc Sports Coaching and Development and completed his Uefa ‘A’ licence.

Following his studies he worked full time for 10 years at the FAI co-ordinating the newly established FAI backed BA Sport and Exercise (Soccer) programme at IT Carlow before heading to New Zealand.

As the initial Course Leader on the IT Carlow course which was introduced in conjunction with the FAI in 2009 O’Reilly is pleased to be back in his old role at Carlow.

“You could say it’s definitely a dream job to be able to get the opportunity to take over my old role at IT Carlow.

“I always wanted to go away and test myself in another country and I loved my time in New Zealand. It’s a great country that offers many opportunities in various sports for youngsters.

“However I’ve a young family and we had a chat. It was time to come home, for school and everything. Leaving New Zealand early last year was hard but it was the right time”, he explained.

O’Reilly never envisaged a return to IT Carlow in the same role and is grateful for the chance as he now prepares for the new intake of students.

“At Carlow we can offer the only courses run in conjunction with the FAI and a great option for students with a passion for football who want to – Train, Play, Coach and Study.

“The courses available are a BA Sport Coaching & Business Management (Soccer)-CW827 and a BA (Hons) Sports Management & Coaching-CW858.

“We particularly want to grow the number of opportunities for female students on the courses and are putting a particular emphasis on attracting more female students with a passion for football..

“The women’s game in Ireland is expanding very quickly and there is much growth still to come not just at the highest level but at every age group. I’m really keen to see more girls exploring the option to apply for the course.

“Our state-of-the-art facilities in a new 15 million, 31-acre south sports campus which opened last year and that alongside our existing top level sports facility on the main campus all help to confirm IT Carlow in the leading bracket of colleges in the field of sport education.

“As an added incentive Sport, Academic, High Performance and Mature Scholarship options are also available for those who qualify”. he explained.

Recently former Republic of Ireland internationals Paul Green and Daryl Murphy attended IT Carlow for their UEFA A and B coaching practice organised through FAI Coach Educator and IT Carlow graduate Ross Kenny with IT Carlow football degree students helping out.

Later the two former players hosted a Q & A with the students giving them a picture of their playing careers and now their journey into coaching.

O’Reilly is determined to continue the impressive track record graduates from the course have achieved with a host of them now working both at home and abroad in football related positions.

Among them are Jamie Carr the Academy Head Coach at Manchester City, Gary Sweeney a Recruitment Analyst with Manchester United, Paddy Carey Reading FC Academy Head Coach, Danny Ledwith New Zealand FA Football Development Manager, Claire Kinsella at Power Soccer (Canada) as Programme Coordinator, Maurice Hayes is Head Coach with Vancouver United Youth Boys, Stevie Lawless in Sweden as Malmo FC S&C coach and Darren McGarry in the British Virgin Islands Under-15s Head Coach.
