Holders Maynooth University advance as Crowley Cup reaches semi-final stages
The action continued in the Irish Universities Crowley Cup competition this week when all four quarter final ties were decided.
Holders Maynooth University reached next Tuesday’s semi-finals and they will be joined by UCC from the South Section while the North Section qualifiers are Queens University and Ulster University-Coleraine.

The semi final draw will see Queens face UU Coleraine and in a repeat of the 2020 final Maynooth play UCC.
Maynooth needed a well taken hat trick from Dan Ryan plus Shane Towey’s fine finish before they were able to see off the spirited challenge of visitors College of Surgeons.
Ryan broke the deadlock minutes before half time with two quick goals in what had been a close contest up till then.
The first a well taken individual effort and his second came from a beautiful finished 20yard free kick.
Surgeons had earlier gone close to opening the score after a Nasser Monzer free kick was initially spilled by Maynooth ‘keeper Sean Martin but Mohammed Jahwari just failed to bundle the ball home.
Michael Mikhail was kept busy in the Surgeons goal after the break and time after time he managed to deny Maynooth any further scores with some splendid stops until the final ten minutes.
Maynooth eventually struck again and Towey swept home a perfect right-wing cross from Oisin Furlong.
Ryan then completed his hat trick finishing off a great move involving Emmanuel James and Dotun Mobinuori.
UCC came from a goal down early in the second half against DCU at Glasnevin to quickly hit an equaliser and eventually force the tie to be decided on penalties.
The Cork side came out on top winning 5-4 after the DCU goal scorer Dylan Wall failed to convert his spot kick.
A highly competitive opening half remained scoreless until Wall put DCU in front five minutes after the restart beating UCC ‘keeper Eoin O’Donnell with a clinical strike from the edge of the box.
Cork’s David Adebeyo and PJ O’Regan had been denied by some fine first half saves by Cian Harkin but the DCU ‘keeper was unable to stop substitute Owen Forde forcing the ball home on the hour mark.
With no further goals being added despite plenty of effort by both sides it was UCC who progressed with five perfect spot kicks.
In the North Section Ulster University Coleraine proved too strong for their Derry visitors from Ulster University Magee with a clear cut 5-0 victory.
The home side were comfortably three ahead at the break and they continued to pile on the pressure in the second half to hit two more.
A brace from Luke Taylor plus Patrick Moore, Jack Chambers and James Cowan with one each completed their total.
Queens University will be the Coleraine sides semi final opponents after they accounted for Ulster University Jordanstown 4-1.
James Adair shocked the Belfast visitors putting Jordanstown ahead early on but Queens got back on terms by half time.
The second half was dominated by Queens who hit three further goals to take the tie.
Jamie Marlin struck twice and Ryan Irvine and Jonny Edwards were the Queens scorers.
