JIM BYRNE CUP FINAL: ELM MOUNT 2-3 MOUNTVIEW
A bright sunny Saturday afternoon on the snooker table down ‘The Farm’ and Elm Mount facing Mountview in an AFL Jim Byrne Cup final.
The Blanch boys were quickest from the traps and they took the lead a couple of second into the third minute when Martin ‘Harmo’ Mullarney rose at the far post to head home a Ken Cullen cross from the right.
Elm Mount woke up and Paul ‘Trigger’ McClelland went close on a couple of occasions before Mullarney set Richie Coates up but he couldn’t get enough on it in the 19th minute.
Elm Mount probably bossed possession for the remainder of the half but too often the money ball was lacking or the wrong option was taken and they went in a goal down.
To say things brightened up in the second half would be to greatly understate. Elm Mount pressed and were rewarded when Trigger headed home a Davy McKenna delivery from the right to level matters just before the hour mark.
Four later they went in front. Graham McCarthy played a one-two with Brian Mulligan before side-footing the return to the net.
Mountview had appeals for a penalty waved away in the 74th minute but with 13 left they were level again when the excellent Coates broke through a cluster and fired to the net from the edge of the box.
Worse was to come for Elm as they lost their skipper Ger Beirne to a second yellow three later and Mountview were very much in the ascendancy. Right on the 90 man-of-the-match Mullarney knocked home the winner and they held on for 6 injury-time minutes.
Tough loss for Elm Mount but I’m sure the spirits were lifted when they saw their team-mate Stephen Cluxton lift the Sam Maguire later in the day.
