Five goal Roundwood make it a double as Coolboy fall in Under 16 Jako Cup

Roundwood did a WDSL double as they lifted the Under 16 Jako Cup in style.

Having secured the Coral Leisure Plate earlier this month, the Vartry Grounds based side proved too good for a brave Coolboy team on Sunday at the Carlisle Grounds in Bray.

Cruising at 3-0 at the interval, and 4-1 with 20 minutes to go, the Blue’s had to withstand a late rally by their opponents.

The opening score – when it came in the 28th minute – came from an unusual source.

Off a corner on the left-wing, John Paul Nolan curled in the dead-ball right footed. It evaded everybody in the six-yard area and a defender at the back post before dropping into the net.

The Vartry outfit had the chance to extend the lead when awarded a 32nd minute penalty.

From a free-kick punted long down the left-flank, Rangers full-back appeared to be fouled. But referee Keith Neville allowed play to continue.

That saw James Cardiff burst onto the ball only to be brought down inside the box as he tried to cut in.

However, Rhys Nolan saved John Paul Nolan’s penalty. The goalkeeper also denied Enda Byrne off the rebound. An almighty scramble followed with John Paul Nolan and Cardiff having shots charged down.

It did become 2-0 though in the 37th minute as Coolboy didn’t learn from the opening goal.

John Paul Nolan again whipped in a corner right footed form the left. This time, Conor Fee timed his run to score with a close-range glancing header.

The same two players combined for Roundwood’s third in stunning fashion in the 39th minute.

Fee angled a brilliant 40-yard cross-field pass left to right. John Paul Nolan – who appeared offside – latched onto it to angle a superb reverse shot that flew into the top left-hand corner of the net from 16-yards.

To their credit, the Maroon’s came out battling after the turnaround. They were rewarded for their efforts in the 50th minute.

Odhran Doyle sent in a cross from the left channel. Striker Oisin Gorman tried to shield in the box. The ball span free for sub Zach Furlong to react and hit a low placed shot from 14-yards to the bottom right hand corner of the goal.

But the Blue’s responded on the hour mark to make it 4-1.

From Fee’s centre from the left, Cardiff was unable to connect. But Enda Byrne behind him did as the forward lashed a ten-yard left footed half volley emphatically in.

Yet, Rangers kept going. That pulled one back in the 66th minute. Skipper Conor Clinton charged down a clearance along the right flank. He reacted burst to the loose ball, burst into the box and poke low past the advancing Cian Timmons.

The never say die attitude continued in the 73rd minute. A Roundwood player attempted to clear inside his own box. But left the ball to a team-mate. That allowed Furlong to nip in and slide a low effort on the spin past Timmons from ten yards out to an empty net.

But three minutes deep in injury time, Roundwood were awarded a second penalty when the match official deemed there a push off Donal Byrne’s free.

Fee’s spot-kick was saved by Rhys Nolan. But the winger buried the follow-up to seal victory.
