Dramatic late winner for St. Eunan’s in Dr. Tony O’Neill Senior Cup final

St. Eunan’s College, Letterkenny…….. 3 De La Salle College, Waterford……2

Barrett (21), Plumb (72), Brown (90 pen)                                             Grinius (37), O’Brien (50)

TIERNAN BROWN converted from the spot in the 91st minute to ensure St. Eunan’s retained the Dr. Tony O’Neill Senior Cup in a pulsating tie in Athlone Town yesterday afternoon (April 6).

The last time this Cup competition was played, the Saints had to share the spoils with finalists Douglas Community School of Cork as the COVID-19 pandemic ceased all competitions back in early 2020 and no football took place in 2021 either.

Relishing a return to the top flight, St. Eunan’s were dealt a body blow when they conceded on the twenty minutes as De La Salle talisman Jack Twomey slotted home after Fintan Doherty fumbled his interception but the goal was chalked off by the linesman claiming an off-side infringement.

Eunan’s responded immediately with a quick counter attack that saw Dylan McAteer feed Noah BARRETT for him to slot home from 12 yards out.

The Waterford equaliser came eight minutes from the interval with Matas GRINIUS heading in from an Evan Ryan corner.

De La Salle took the lead five minutes into the restart courtesy of Shane O’BRIEN. Matas Grinius’ header came off the upright and the Eunan’s defence didn’t clear the danger as a close range effort from O’Brien delivered another crucial goal for the Munster stars.

Action packed excitement ensued as St. Eunan’s also had a goal disallowed and some brilliant goalkeeping from De La Salle number one Dara Kavanagh kept their dream alive.

But Eunan’s continued pressure finally broke them level with eighteen minutes remaining as Nathan PLUMB struck with a wonderful individual effort.

It looked like extra time was on the cards but a last ditch effort from the Donegal side saw Adam Murphy play a ball into the box for Plumb to chase. Kavanagh came off his line to intercept but was deemed to have taken Pumb out with the match official indicating a penalty on the 90th minute.

The ever impressive Tiernan BROWN dispatched his penalty with confidence for Eunan’s to take a 3-2 lead.

Despite four minutes of additional time, it wasn’t enough for De La Salle to come back into the contest.

Another Eunan’s Senior Cup title, the eight in their remarkable history.
