ENDA MCGUILL CUP QUARTER FINAL SUPER SUBS HELP STEER ROVERS INTO SEMIS

By JOHN HUDSON

DERRY CITY 0 SHAMROCK ROVERS 3

SECOND-half substitutes Jordan Carroll and Danila Bogdanov did the damage with late goals as Shamrock Rovers came away from the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium with a 3-0 victory over Derry City to book their place in the semi final of the Enda McGuill Under 19 cup.
The high flying young Hoops who are currently top of the Southern Division will now entertain Sligo Rovers as they bid for a place in the final while the other semi final sees an all Dublin clash between holders Bohemians and Shelbourne.
The dates and kick off times for both games are expected to be confirmed shortly.
The daunting trip to Derry in the end proved profitable for Stephen Rice’s side who had created several first half chances but were unable to find a way past Derry ‘keeper Daniel Houghton and the tie remained scoreless at the break.
However the second half was developing along the similar lines until the final 20 minutes when Rice introduced first Carroll and then Bogdanov for Darragh Nugent and Luke Kelly.
Carroll then went on to light up the Brandywell with a brilliant first time finish from a right wing cross for Rovers opener.
Minutes later Rovers stretched the lead with a long range effort from Bogdanov who had picked up a quick clearance and coolly shot the ball into the unguarded Derry net after goalkeeper Houghton got stranded in a vain attempted to get his head to a Derry corner.
That corner had been conceded by Rovers ‘keeper Kian Clarke with a top class save as Derry mounted several dangerous attacks in an effort to force an equaliser.
Rovers finally sealed the 3-0 win in the closing minutes with Carroll converting a penalty after Bogdanov had been taken down in the box.
