YOUNG SAINTS WIN HELPS BANISH THE BLUES
ST PATRICKS ATHLETIC …….5
SLIGO ROVERS ………………….1
Five cracking goals from the young Under 19 Saints in some way helped to lift the Bank Holiday gloom around Richmond Park following the first team’s previous day’s early FAI Senior Cup exit to Waterford.
This comfortable 5-1 over Sligo Rovers, another club coming to terms with their similar cup fate keeps Sean O’Connor’s youngsters well on course for SSE Airtricity National Under 19 league top tier honours.
In front of a sizable attendance that include the first team management team of Tim Clancy, Jon Daly, Alan Mathews and PJ Jennings, St Pats came back from a goal down on 20 minutes to draw level before the break and three quick goals in the opening period of the second half plus a late fifth saw them claim all three points.
The home side started on the front foot with Ben McCormack and Jason Forlain all going close to opening the score.
Sligo settled down and against the run of play left winger Aaron Heaney curled in a delightful strike past Kian Clements to give them a surprise lead.
St Pats had further chances of an equaliser with Forlain shooting over and Ross Fay heading wide before McCormack beat Matthew Fox with a first time finish from a Billy Vance cross on 33 minutes.
The second half was dominated by St Pats and on 56 minutes Darius Lipsiuc finally put his side ahead getting the better of Daire McCarthy to run on and steer the ball past Fox.
Shortly after skipper Fay nipped in to extend the lead and four minutes later Vance made it 4-1 with the goal of the game, a fine individual effort that saw him kink past several defenders and shoot low to Fox’s bottom corner.
Paddy Montgomery might have grabbed a consolation goal for Sligo but his snatched at finish was well wide.
St Pat’s rounded off an excellent performance with substitute Luke Kehir hitting the fifth goal in added time.
