Dempsey hat-trick lights up Swords super stylish display at Balheary

SWORDS CELTIC produced an excellent display at Balheary on Sunday afternoon to overcome local rivals Malahide United and claim the points on offer in this Under 18A NDSL encounter.

Central to the performance was Jason Dempsey’s hat-trick and it was his willingness to drop deep and attack from distance that had the visitors struggling to contain his energy and he was the fulcrum of all of the home side’s attacking game.

An excellent first touch and a desire to bring his team mates into the play fired up Swords who dominated possession and visiting goalkeeper Aidan Ward had to make several good saves to thwart the rampaging home side.

The match was excellently handled by Stephen Domican who allowed the play flow but was quick to keep any rough play firmly in check. The game in fairness flowed freely but Malahide seldom threatened the home goal and Swords had netted through Dempsey and Jack Donnelly before the half-time interval.

Malahide were still in the game despite the score deficit and some of the best passing came from the Gannon Park side but some wayward shooting was to prove costly.

But it was the more incisive Swords side which was more direct and whether down the flanks or up the middle Dempsey was central to the excellent approach work.

Dempsey added a second half brace to compete his hat-trick while substitute Conor Grogan was on the mark for a battling Malahide United who gave a decent account and will have better days ahead.

Hats off though to Swords who had some excellent individual performances with Liam Shortall, Jack Donnelly and Dylan Foy catching the eye as Swords – with games in hand – close the gap on pacesetters Dunboyne AFC at the top of the table.
