Crumlin to face Usher Celtic in final of annual Summer Cup competition

By JOHN HUDSON

HOSTS Crumlin United will face Leinster Senior League newcomers Usher Celtic in the final of their annual Summer Cup tournament sponsored by The Village Inn on Saturday August 3 (2.30) in Pearse Park Astro after both sides got through their semi final ties on Thursday night.

While Usher had a reasonably comfortable passage past St Francis recording a 5-2 victory Crumlin needed a penalty shoot out to get the better of an  Oliver Bond Celtic after the sides finished up with a goal apiece.

Oliver Bond had shocked the home side by taking a first half lead through their new Italian born striker Gian Marco Zancanaro who fired home a 25 yard drive after a Michael Malone free had come off the Crumlin wall.

Troy Carey might have stretched that lead early in the second half but Crumlin ‘keeper Mikey Quinn was quick off his line to deny the Oliver Bond man.

Crumlin pressed for an equaliser and Craig Walsh went close before it finally arrived towards the finish with Alan McGreal striking home a well placed penalty after Walsh had been taken down in the box.

The game was then decided in the penalty shoot out with Crumlin edging it 4-3 after Quinn had kept out Ryan Bradley’s effort and Walsh make no mistake hitting the winning spot kick.

Although they went behind early on to Paul Caffrey’s penalty for St Francis it was Usher Celtic who then quickly went on to get a grip on their semi final tie.

The impressive Stephen Donnelly struck home a brilliant brace and a neat header from Gerard Jordan after Donnelly’s cheeky chip had crashed off the crossbar had them in a commanding position by the break.

Jordan Buckley stretched the lead to 4-1 midway in the second half and although Caffrey managed a second for St Francis it was left to Usher’s recruit from Shelbourne Lorcan Shannon to seal the win with what must go down as the goal of the tournament so far, a sublime long range strike over the head of Francis ‘keeper Andrew Walsh.
