Martin Loughran was delighted to see that the hunger for success is still very much in the minds of his side as the hosts Crumlin United stormed to a 7-0 victory over Usher Celtic to capture their Summer Cup sponsored by The Village Inn in the final of the tournament at Pearse Park.

Loughran had steered Crumlin to the Leinster Senior League’s top title last season with a magnificent unbeaten record and then added the Metropolitan Cup and to get the new season off on a high by capturing another piece of silverware so early is a huge boost for the club.

Two quick first half goals put Crumlin well in control against an Usher side that failed to match their semi final performance against St Francis on Thursday night.

Craig Walsh crashed home the opener past Silvio Voivod on 14 minutes after a pin point cross field pass from left back Noel Cummins had picked out the winger.

Eight minutes later skipper James Lee had doubled the lead with a close range finish from Walsh’s cross.

Usher did threaten on a couple of occasions and Paul Keane was just off target with a well struck free while later Stephen Donnelly put his finish over Michael Quinn’s cross bar after good link up play with Fintan Kennedy.

Alan McGreal was denied a third Crumlin goal just before the break with Voivod doing well to keep out the shot.

The second half turned into a goal spree for Crumlin and Sam Burgess, later named Player of the Tournament, grabbed the third minutes after the resumption capitalising on slack defending to gain possession and go on to beat Voivod.

Usher did have a good chance to pull back a goal after Anthony Grouse was played in on the right by Leroy Staunton but with only Quinn to beat he pulled his effort wide of the far post.

Back came Crumlin and Gareth Brady’s cheeky free from close to the side line that went straight into the far corner then made it 4-0 on 70 minutes.

Brady then turned provider to set up McGreal for the fifth and later substitute Gingi Aki who took the Crumlin total to 6-0 with his goal to finish the tournament as overall leading goalscorer on seven goals.

A beautiful lob by Brady over substitute ‘keeper Karl Lynam in the closing minutes for goal number seven was the icing on the cake for Crumlin.
