Cliffoney prove the real masters!

By NOEL KENNEDY

North Sligo Kingpins Cliffoney Celtic captured the headlines in The Sligo Pallets Premier League their last venture into this area was when they won the league in 2009 topping the table, five points clear of second place Ballisodare United and in third place Coolera Rovers.

Cliffoney Celtic did very well for a few seasons then dropped back into the Premier League at the end of 2012 along with Manor Rangers and Quayside Rovers.

They almost made it back to the top in the 2015/2016 season reaching the play off’s against Glenview Stars but it was not to be. But the Cliffoney Boys put all that behind them this season – firstly with a blistering display against Real Tubber they lifted the Cleary Landscapes Pitch & Maintenance Cup at Mac Sharry Park with five goals to two victory over Real Tubber.

This was Cliffoney first bit of silverware in twenty-two years and the North Sligo Warriors had the taste for more. This came by way of the battle for promotion to the Super League and this was their season.

The Riverstown Masters were their opponents and a win here would see them pip St Johns by a point to gain runners up spot and automatic promotion.

Saturday night at Cliffoney seen the large crowd full of hope and expectation and they were not disappointed. The Riverstown Masters who gave a brilliant account of themselves in their first season were well organised and extremely astute but Cliffoney Celtic were not to be denied.

Brian O’Connor hit the back of the Riverstown net on thirty minutes and again seven minutes into the second half to add his second goal of the night

. Alan Harrison hit the third goal two minutes later and the singing started thirteen minutes from time and Mark Burns put the cherry on the cake and Cliffoney alight.

Congratulation’s to Cliffoney Celtic Management, Staff Players and Supporters North Sligo is back in the Top Flight.
