UCD ……. 3   UCC …….. 0

CIARAN BEHAN played a vital role with two cracking goals in a comprehensive 3-0 Collingwood Cup victory for UCD over UCC at Belfield which sends them into next week’s semi-final against Maynooth University who edged out Trinity College 3-2 in another quarter final tie.

Opting not to use any of their SSE Airtricity squad ahead of Friday night’s Premier Division opener at Shamrock Rovers, UCD dominated most of the game.

A well struck Ciaran Behan free on the half hour put them in front at the break.

Adam Lennon then went on to double the score shortly after the resumption and finally Behan sealed the win with his second on the hour.

The heavy rain had eased slightly when the game kicked off and it was UCD who dominated from the start.

The Cork ‘keeper Arthur Nganou was kept on his toes dealing with early UCD chances from Danu Kinsella Bishop, Rossa McAllister and Behan. Full back Michael McHugh then tested Nganou who did well to turn the ball out for a corner.

UCD finally made the breakthrough they had threaten from the start when Behan rifled a delightful left footed free kick from the edge of the box into the bottom corner of the UCC goal just on the half hour mark.

UCC had been dealt a blow just before UCD scored when they lost centre forward Eoghan Vaughan through injury.

The score stayed at 1-0 at the interval but it didn’t take long for the home side to double it. Lennon picked up a ball on the right and he worked his way across the edge of the box to hit a low drive that Nganou got down to gather but unfortunately, he appeared to misjudge the flight of the ball and it squirmed under his diving body and into the net.

Minutes later Behan stuck again for his second goal of the day to seal the win easily beating a couple of Cork defenders to steer the ball past the helpless Nganou.

UCD continued to press for more goals and Kinsella Bishop was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet with a couple of good chances before he made way for Andreaas Djuruus. While another substitute Billy Griffin saw his goal bound shot blocked on the line.

The other Collingwood quarter final ties saw comfortable wins for Queens University at DCU (5-0) and NUI Galway hammered Ulster University 7-1 at the AUL Complex.

Next week’s  semi finals line up sees UCD play Maynooth and NUI Galway face Queens with the details to be confirmed later.
