Amour delivers stunning clincher with late, late overhead kick to sink IADT

RUSTLERS: COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES LEAGUE
DIVISION 3 Group B

IADT DUN LAOGHAIRE…  1 RATHMINES COLLEGE…  2

Junabi Amour clinched a 2-1 win for Rathmines College with a last minute spectacular overhead kick to edge out hosts IADT Dun Laoghaire at Kilbogget Park.

The win brought some relief to Rathmines manager Aidan Roche who was happy to see his side picked up their first Division Three points of the season netting their goals at the beginning and end of a keenly fought affair that could have gone either way.

While Dun Laoghaire side have yet to register any points on the board after suffering a heavy defeat to table toppers TU Dublin-Tallaght ‘B’ in their opening fixture followed by a big improvement at Grangegorman where they were unlucky to go down 2-1 to TU Dublin-City Campus ‘C’ side.

Rathmines struck in the first attack of the game when Amos Nohilly burst through on the left flank and was allowed to go on and beat Cormac Quinn from close in with a firm low drive after just three minutes had been played.

Jack Kissane quickly responded for Dun Laoghaire but he shot over after been put clear on goal by a Ross Broderick through pass.

Rathmines ‘keeper Tommy Duff  was then in action first saving an Ian Coone well directed free kick and later keeping out good efforts from Dillon Turner and Kissane.

At the other end a swift counter attack saw Richie Johnstone striker the base of Quinn’s post when he tried his luck from outside the box.

The home side were rewarded for all their pressure with a deserved equaliser just before the break when David Harris was put clear on goal by Broderick’s a brilliant ball over the top and the tall striker coolly lifted the ball over Duff.

Kissane might have shot Dun Laoghaire in front early after the resumption but after getting past the Rathmines back line his finish went past the post.

Rathmines always posed a threat with swift counter attacks particularly from Dennis Udoye and Nohilly down the left but sterling work by Paul Micheau ,Turner and substitute Azzy Smko kept out the danger.

Chances kept coming at both ends in the final quarter as both sides strove for a winner.

Rathmines Joel Bekombo had the best of the chances but his side footed close range finish went outside the post, while later Cronin did brilliantly to tip over Jack Fleming’s header from a corner.

The home side were unlucky when Kissane got through again only to see his low drive rebound off the post.
Dun Laoghaire might have had a penalty after Turner fell in the box after a clash with Duff but referee Christy Lawrence was having none of it.

Just when it looked as if the sides would have to settle for a point apiece Rathmines struck a killer blow grabbing a late winner.

And what a goal it was with Amour doing really well to connect with the ball with a spectacular over head kick from inside the box that flew straight into the roof of the Dun Laoghaire net.
